What is Oreo milk tea boba?
Boba tea is a popular Tawainese drink that’s made its way to the West and exploded in popularity. It’s taken on many new forms and flavors since then, and in this recipe, that’s exactly what I’ve tried to highlight. Black tea, oat milk, Oreos, maple syrup, and chewy tapioca pearls come together in a boba tea like you’ve never experienced before!
It’s creamy, refreshing, and best of all, free from any dairy products. All you need is 5 simple ingredients and you’ll be sipping out of your favorite boba tea straw in 10 minutes or less! And the best part? This drink is way more budget-friendly compared to store-bought versions.
Enjoy your Oreo milk tea boba on hot summer days or whenever you’re in the mood for a little guilt-free indulgence. Serve it as is, or add a heaping scoop of oat milk whipped cream!

Is boba tea vegan?
Traditionally, creamy bubble teas like this one contain milk or even cream. However, I’m here to tell you that a plant-based version tastes just as good! Here’s a breakdown of the simple vegan swaps I utilized in my recipe:
- Milk: Instead of cow’s milk, I like to use oat milk because it’s thick, rich, and creamy — just like its non-dairy counterpart.
- Sweeteners: Some boba tea recipes use honey or white sugar as a sweetener, which isn’t strictly vegan. In this recipe, you can use maple syrup or brown sugar syrup
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Black tea: Provides depth and aroma. You can use a black tea bag or loose-leaf black tea, depending on what you have available. Or, try green tea for a lighter flavor.
- Boba: Tapioca pearls add a deliciously chewy texture. You should be able to find them at any Asian food market or online. I prefer to use quick-cooking boba, but you can use regular tapioca pearls. Just increase the cooking time as directed on the package.
- Oat milk: Oat milk creates a creamy, slightly sweet base that makes this Oreo milk boba tea feel extra indulgent. If you prefer, you can use almond, cashew, or soy milk instead.
- Oreos: Gives the drink its distinctively sweet and chocolatey flavor. Any vegan sandwich cookie can be used as a substitute. For a healthier option, I use Simple Mill's nut butter stuffed sandwich cookies.
- Maple syrup: I prefer maple syrup to naturally sweeten my tapioca pearls, but you can also use brown sugar syrup or agave.
How to make Oreo milk boba tea
- Step 1: Start by steeping your black tea until it’s aromatic and robust. I recommend chilling it beforehand because no one likes a lukewarm boba tea!
- Step 2: Cook your tapioca pearls in a pot of boiling water until they rise to the top. For quick-cooking boba, this only takes about 5 minutes. Then, toss them with maple syrup.
- Step 3: Combine your tea, oat milk, Oreos, and ice in a blender. Blend the mixture on high until it’s smooth and creamy.
- Step 4: Layer a serving glass with boba followed by the Oreo mixture. Top it all off with vegan whipped cream, crushed Oreos, shaved chocolate, or whatever else you prefer. Just don’t forget to serve it with a wide-mouthed boba straw to catch all the pearls.
Storage & Reheating
A cold Oreo milk tea boba is best served right away, but if you find yourself with leftovers, you can keep them for a short while in the fridge.
Transfer the leftover Oreo milk bubble tea to an airtight container or mason jar, then store it in the fridge for up to a day. It’s best to separate the boba from the tea mixture and store them in different containers if possible.
Variations
- Oreo flavors: Use golden Oreos, birthday Oreos, or even mint Oreos for a twist.
- Milkshake: Try adding a scoop of vegan vanilla ice cream for a thicker texture.
- Chocolate: Add a splash of vegan chocolate syrup for an extra chocolate kick.
- Coffee: Blend in some espresso powder or strongly brewed coffee for a caffeine hit.
Top tips
- Water: Brew your black tea between 200°F to 212°F for the best flavor and extraction.
- Don’t over blend: Over-blending this drink will result in a foamy milk tea. Blend it just enough to combine the mixture.
- Cool the tea: Ensure the tea is cold before blending everything together to prevent a lukewarm Oreo milk bubble tea.
- Bubble tea straw: Use a wide-mouthed straw for the most enjoyable sipping experience.
FAQ
Although this recipe contains caffeine from the black tea, you can easily swap it out for a decaffeinated black tea of your choice. You can also use rooibos tea, which is naturally caffeine-free.
If you prefer a thicker Oreo boba milk tea texture, add more ice or reduce the milk content.
Most flavors of Oreos are vegan-friendly. However, it’s important to always check the label to make sure.
