What is Honeydew Milk Tea?
This honeydew milk tea is unbelievably creamy, refreshing, and sweet! It perfectly blends the mellow flavor of ripe honeydew melon with the earthiness of green tea and matcha, just like my matcha bubble tea.
Paired with oat milk and maple syrup, it’s ultra-smooth, flavor-rich, and satisfying. I also love to serve mine with freshly cooked boba pearls for a soft, chewy contrast to the creamy milk tea.
Whether you're enjoying it as a midday pick-me-up or serving it to friends, this recipe is sure to become a favorite in your bubble tea repertoire!
Ingredients & Substitutions
- Boba Pearls: To save time, I recommend using quick-cooking boba. You should be able to find these at your local Asian food market or online. If you can’t find tapioca pearls, use coconut jelly or sago or omit them.
- Maple Syrup: Adds natural sweetness to the boba. Just make sure to use 100% pure maple syrup, not pancake syrup. Coconut nectar or agave can be used as substitutes.
- Green Tea: Provides a subtle, earthy base for the tea. You can use loose-leaf tea or tea bags. Feel free to use jasmine or black tea for a different flavor profile.
- Honeydew: I use real honeydew over powdered honeydew to provide a refreshing, balanced sweetness. Cantaloupe also works for a more floral flavor.
- Matcha Powder: Adds depth and a vibrant green color. I recommend using ceremonial-grade matcha for the best taste.
- Oat Milk: Gives the drink a smooth, creamy consistency. Almond milk and soy milk also work. Or, you can use coconut milk instead for a richer, creamier texture.
How to make honeydew milk tea
- Step 1: Start by steeping your green tea bag in 180-degree water for 5 minutes. After steeping, use a spoon to remove and discard the tea bag. For optimal flavor, screw a lid on the mason jar and let the brewed tea chill in the fridge for at least an hour.
- Step 2: While the tea is chilling, bring a saucepan of water to a boil and cook the boba. Once they float to the top, cook them for 3-4 minutes. Taste test one to ensure they're soft and chewy before draining. Then, mix maple syrup with the cooked pearls in a bowl.
- Step 3: In a blender, combine the chilled tea, oat milk, chopped honeydew, and matcha. Blend until you achieve a smooth consistency, ensuring the honeydew is fully pureed.
- Step 4: In a tall glass, add the syrup-coated boba pearls. Next, add a layer of crushed ice. Then, pour the honeydew milk tea blend over the ice and enjoy!
How to Serve Bubble Tea
If you choose to serve your honeydew milk tea with pearls, I suggest using a wide-mouth straw. You can usually find reusable straws made from bamboo, glass, or metal online or in kitchen supply stores.
If you don’t have any straws, use a spoon to scoop up some pearls with each sip. Either way, this milk tea is refreshing and delicious!
Storage
Bubble tea is best consumed right away for the most ideal flavor and boba texture. But for any extra, follow these tips:
- Fridge: Store the fully prepared honeydew milk tea in the fridge for up to 1-2 days. If possible, strain the tapioca pearls out and keep them in a separate container.
- Freezer: You can freeze honeydew milk tea without boba in ice cube trays to chill your next batch. I don’t recommend freezing the pearls as it will affect their texture too much.
- Prep ahead: Feel free to steep the tea and cook the boba ahead of time, then store them in the refrigerator until you're ready to assemble the drink. I suggest keeping boba in the fridge for a maximum of 1-2 days.
Variations
- Tropical: Substitute honeydew with mango or pineapple for a tropical flavor.
- Berry: Add a handful of blended berries for a fruity berry milk tea.
- Chai Infusion: Brew chai tea instead of green tea for a spiced flavor profile.
- Caffeine-Free: Use caffeine-free herbal tea as a base for a nighttime beverage.
Top Tips
- Brewing Temperature: Brew green tea at the right temperature (180 degrees Fahrenheit) to prevent bitterness.
- Chill the Tea: Ensure the brewed tea is chilled before blending for a refreshing taste.
- Serve Immediately: Serve your honeydew milk tea immediately after assembling it for the best texture of the boba.
